Summer is arguably the best time of the year – no responsibilities (except remembering to put on sunscreen!), no school, and plenty of time to enjoy having fun in the sun.
Whether you’re at home or on an epic summer vacation, there are a few things that are sure to set the mood for hot days and warm nights. Here are some of my favorite things to kick off the season!
1. Voluspa Candles
Nothing says ambiance like an amazing smelling candle. If you haven’t smelled Voluspa Candles, you are seriously missing out. They aren’t overly strong like a lot of other candles; instead they lightly give off the perfect blend of aroma that’s needed to set the right mood both indoors and outdoors. I keep the Mokara by my bed and the Maison Jardin, Amaranth, and Jasmine in my bathroom.
2. Snake Plants
Don’t let the name scare you — this plant has nothing to do with snakes! Not only does it look great as a decoration, it actually has tons of fantastic health benefits (including full 24-hour oxygen circulation), which makes it the perfect plant to keep in your bedroom. This output of clean, natural air will leave you refreshed and ready to take on the day each morning. The snake plant also filters chemical vapors from the air like formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, xylene, toluene, and benzene. Stylish and beneficial? I’ll take 5, please!
3. Aloe Plants
Like the snake plant, aloe plants do much more for your home than just freshen the air. Aloe is a wonderful skin-soother for those early summer sunburns that you might accidentally get, or just as a healing and moisturizing supplement. I always stock up on aloe plants during spring to prepare for potential summer sunburns and smoothies (did I mention they’re delicious too?)
4. Sheer Window Curtains
These are crucial when you want to let in that beautiful summer sunlight. At the start of every Daylight Saving Time, I always transfer out my darker winter curtains so I can naturally wake up earlier during the longer summer days. I bought these a year ago and love them!

5. Powerful Fan
If you live in a place #blessed with air conditioning, then this probably won’t be your top priority, but if you’re looking to either save money or cool down in a place where there’s no A/C already installed, then do yourself a favor and invest in a large powerful fan. I recommend buying one early summer, especially if you live in an area (like me) where they sell out quickly.
6. Himalayan Air Purifier
Did you ever think that salt could purify the air? Surprise, it can! I’m not talking about regular table salt, but Himalayan salt. This salt has been proven to purify the air and it actually makes a big difference in overall air quality. Himalayan salt also helps with seasonal allergies, respiratory problems, and pesky migraines that may have been an issue during the winter months. Plus, it tastes good! Seriously, is there anything this salt can’t do?
7. Poo-Pourri
This one is sure to make some people feel awkward… but everybody poops, right? Poo-Pourri helps the smelly stuff become less smelly, and who wouldn’t like that? If you’re planning on visiting friends or family this summer and feel squeamish about being away from home, then this will be an invaluable addition to pack in your luggage.
8. Essential Oil Diffuser
I have to admit: I was a little weirded out by essential oils when I first heard about them. What do they really do? However, after my friend let me try hers out, I’m hooked! It’s amazing how they change my mood from stressed to calmed in just a few minutes. Plus, there are a ton of different scents and blends available, so if you’re not sure which ones are the best for you, then I recommend taking this fun quiz to find out and pick up a few bottles!

9. Citronella Candles
If you live in a place with pesky summer bugs, then a citronella candle is an absolute must-have. While they only come in one scent and tend to have more muted designs on their containers, they are certain to keep you itch-free as you enjoy cookouts with friends at night, and you just can’t beat that.
10. “Yes Please” by Amy Poehler
Amy Poehler is quite possibly the most hilarious woman of our decade. In fact, I’m sure of it. If you want to take summer reading to the next level, you can’t miss her hilarious personal stories combined with her sharp wit in her first book, Yes Please. Her personality seamlessly transfers to the ink of each and every page, making it a must-read book for summer 2015.
