Sometimes you wake up in the morning and know that you want to work out, while other times, making it to the gym can seem impossible. Whether it’s cold, still dark, or you just don’t have the time to drive there and back while still making it to work on time, the hardest part of exercising can be getting out the door. What do you do when you aren’t Jennifer Aniston and don’t have a state-of-the-art gym in your basement? Well, you work out in you living room! Here are some great ways to work out without equipment.
Great Ways To Work Out Without Equipment
The first thing you need is a bit of space. You don’t need to an entire room, just enough space to move around without crashing into a coffee table. Carpet is ideal, especially for getting on the ground to do crunches or stretches. If you don’t have carpet, a yoga mat works well.
Next step: turn on the TV. In the comfort of you’re own home, you can watch whatever you want. So, go ahead and catch up on “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” or blast some great 80s music… this is one of the best parts of working out at home. Since I usually work out in the morning, the fourth hour of the Today Show with Kathy Lee and Hoda is my entertainment of choice. It can really be great “me” time. Plus, you can do all of this in your PJ’s, without brushing your hair, and it’s 100% acceptable. No teenager in a perfectly coordinated gym outfit will be there to judge you.
With an at-home workout, the options are endless. Your own body weight is an awesome tool. Start out by doing 3 sets of 15 reps for each exercise and increase as you can.
- For arms: Do pushups and tricep dips on the stairs.
- For abs: Do crunches and hold a plank for 60 seconds.
- For cardio: Do high knees, burpees, and jumping jacks.
- For legs: Try a 60 second wall-sit, squats, lunges, and calf-raises. Heck, even run up the stairs in your home or somewhere nearby.
Want to go a step further? Grab a few sets of dumbbells and do your strength training at home instead of the weight room at the gym. If you feel like you don’t have the discipline to orchestrate all of this yourself, go on Pinterest! It is a great way to find workouts with visual, detailed instructions. Just search “at home workout ” and you’ll be amazed at the options that pop up. And I promise, some of them really will make you sweat (at least in my case they do)! You can even find fitness videos on the feed some are only 10 minutes long but will still make you sore the next day.
So next time you don’t feel like brushing your teeth in order to go to the gym, remember it isn’t an excuse not to work out! You can do it at home.. and it won’t cost you an arm and a leg or require any fancy equipment either!
