7 Tips to Keep Your Eyes (and Eyelashes!) Looking Young and Healthy
1. Remove Makeup Before Bed
No matter how tired you are, always remove your makeup before hitting the sack, especially your eye makeup. Leaving concealer and mascara on overnight can dry out the skin and lashes, emphasizing wrinkles and crow’s feet, and increasing eyelash loss and breakage. Gentle makeup removing wipes are a great, quick option, or go for a lotion that can be applied to cotton pads. Make sure they’re soaked through and rest them over closed eyes for a second before wiping slowly so as not to pull on lashes or irritate the tender under-eye area. As a natural alternative, try this DIY makeup remover, which also benefits you by moisturizing and stimulating eyelash growth and strength.
*IMPORTANT* Avoid the eye area completely when washing your face. There’s no need for it, and rubbing on the area with (oftentimes) harsh soaps can dry out the skin and cause premature wrinkles. Be sure to follow suit during your morning washing routine as well!
2. Slather on the Moisturizer
After washing, liberally apply a hydrating, overnight moisturizer underneath and around the eyes. Creams targeted specifically for the eye area, especially those with anti-aging formulas, are your best bet. Anything is better than nothing though, so make sure never to skimp on the moisturizer just because you don’t have a high end cream on hand.
3. Pamper Those Lashes
Just like hair, eyelashes need a little TLC in order to stay strong and long. After moisturizing, gently rub coconut oil over both the top and bottom lashes to improve strength and naturally promote growth, then coat the lash line with a proven eyelash growth formula. The final ingredient, sleep, will take care of the rest.
4. Brightening Morning Boost
In the morning, post-wash, simultaneously wake up and hydrate the under eye area with a light, brightening formula containing either caffeine or vitamin C (or both!). To instantly reduce puffiness, leave it in the fridge overnight prior to using. Once again, make sure not to skimp on the moisturizer!
Even if you’re staying in, apply liner and/or mascara every morning so you won’t rub your eyes, which can irritate the skin and cause wrinkles.
5. Always Use Primer
Primer makes a huge difference in the makeup application process. Not only does it smooth the entire area, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, but it also improves the hold and look of makeup. Gently apply both above and below the eye after moisturizing, focusing on problem areas.
6. Dab on Concealer
Now that the area is nice and smooth, very gently dab under-eye concealer (using your ring finger) from the inner eye towards the center, then stop and dab to blend. Try to avoid applying concealer to the outer eye altogether, as this area is the most likely to crease, which can emphasize and exacerbate crow’s feet. By now, your eyes should look bright, fresh, and you should look (even if you don’t quite feel) wide awake.
7. Use a Curling Mascara
Remember the first time you tried do use an eyelash curler? Intimidating stuff. It’s time to set this scary-looking, and sometimes painful(!) contraption aside. Nowadays, mascaras are targeted for every type of look. In addition, the majority of them also curl the lashes with either the brush shape, formula, or both – and they actually work! For a more dramatic look, go for a dark, dramatic formula, and apply multiple coats if necessary. Do your best to stay away from the curler, though, or risk irritating the lash line or possibly even pulling out clumps of eyelashes…yikes!
*IMPORTANT* To keep yourself from accidentally rubbing your eyes throughout the day, apply liner and/or mascara every morning, even if you’re just going to be staying in. This will prevent you from distractedly irritating the skin around the area, which can cause wrinkles, since you’ll be conscious of avoiding raccoon eyes.
