Washes
The wash of the jeans you picked out are very important, so what will you pick: light or dark wash?
There’s a simple solution for those looking to figure out which one is right for you. For those looking for a more casual look, pick a lighter wash — it’s just right for summer fun at the beach and are a perfect daytime look.
However, if you want to transform your shorts from day to night, try out a darker wash for a more sophisticated look. Or have the best of both worlds and just have both!

Length and Fit
When you hear of cutoffs, most people immediately assume supershort, Daisy Duke-style, but it doesn’t have to be like that! From shorts to capris, you have to find a length that you’re comfortable with.
Pro tip: find your favorite shorts and measure their length.
If you want to change the length, here’s the breakdown of what lengths you’ll have to cut your jeans:
- Capris: cut right below the knee
- Bermuda Shorts: cut right above the knee
- Classic shorts: hit 3–5 inches above the knee
- Short Shorts or Daisy Dukes: their hemline is about 2 – 3 inches.
The next step is finding jeans with a perfect fit. Remember this basic rule: the baggier the jeans, the baggier the shorts. The tighter the jeans, the tighter the shorts. Also, as the shorts get shorter, it’s better to go with a tighter jeans. Make sure to try the jeans on first!

Cut
Now, the important part: the cut. Start off by trying on the jeans and marking where you want them to be cut using either a safety pin or marking it with a pen. Remember that cutoffs can fray, so you might want to give yourself a half inch or an inch extra from your ideal cut.
Afterwards, lay the jeans on a flat surface and with a piece of chalk, mark a straight line going towards the crotch. Ideally, you’re not going to be cutting straight across, so make sure to draw diagonally, which creates a ‘v’ shape.
Then, voila: your own jean shorts! You’ll be looking stylish this summer with this simple DIY.
