There’s no doubt that the idea of washing your face with oil sounds strange or even contradictory, but many people are discovering the benefits of this type of skin care treatment and have made it a part of their daily routine.
The concept behind this “like dissolves like” method is that oil used on the skin will help to dissolve impurities and oils found in your pores. This is especially intriguing among consumers who prefer more natural products and new cleansing methods.
Surprisingly, this isn’t really a “new” method. The ancient Greeks used oils as cleansers and knew about the moisturizing and deep cleansing effects. The trend is becoming popular again and regular users are discovering their skin is free from acne, soft, hydrated and clearer than ever with a healthy glow.

But before you run to the kitchen and grab the vegetable oil, there are a few tips you’ll need to know to reap the benefits of this unique facial treatment. First of all, be sure you only use natural oils such as olive oil or castor oil. Avoid using only castor oil on your skin. If you choose to use castor oil, always mix it with another natural oil to create a combination blend. Sunflower oil, coconut oil, and hazelnut oil are other great options that can be used alone or in combination for cleansing.
Play around with the oils and combinations until you find the treatment that works best for you. It may take a couple of times, but the results are worth it.

Cleaning your face with oil can be done in the shower or sink; however, you may find when you are just starting that the sink is much easier. Also, keep in mind that oil can make the shower very slippery!
While it may be tempting, avoid wetting your face with water before massaging the oil mixture into your skin. Saturate your skin with the oil and massage thoroughly for 1-2 minutes. For a more thorough facial, you can leave the oil on for 10 minutes.
Next soak a washcloth or small towel with very hot water and completely wring it out. Place the hot, moist towel on your face and leave it for 1 minute. If necessary, do it again until the oil is removed. Even after two steam treatments with the washcloth, you may feel a thin layer of oil left on your face. That is just fine – it will continually moisturize your face and give you a healthy glow.
The oil cleansing technique has proved to be successful for individuals with dry, oily or combination skin and it might be worth a try if you’re looking for a natural way to cleanse your face. As your skin is adjusting to the change, avoid using soaps and facial cleansers as it will only take your skin longer to adjust to the process. Have fun and enjoy that healthy glow!
