Winter for me means wearing a cozy sweater paired with my favorite boots by a warm fire. But cold weather also means frizzy, static hair, chapped lips, and flaky skin. Gross, I know. That’s why it’s so important to put more effort into your daily regimen for the winter months. Don’t be a victim of the cold climate. Stay radiant and beautiful year-round with these top dos and don’ts of winter skin care.
1. DO Use Body Lotion Daily
Moisturizing with a body lotion is one of the most important steps you can take to create and maintain beautiful, silky-smooth skin. Body lotions not only replenish lost moisture but they also aid in combating the aging process.
In the summer months, our skin gets moisture from the humidity in the air and during your body’s natural sweating process. However, in the winter, we have to work harder to keep the moisture locked in our skin.
2. DON’T Take Hot Showers
Jumping into a hot shower to offset the frigid cold may seem like a great idea but don’t do it. The extreme in temperatures shock your skin, strips the moisture, and leaves you with scaly, flaky skin. Instead, do your skin a favor and take lukewarm showers to make the transition easy.
3. DO Read The Ingredients
A product could have the prettiest bottle but it’s about what’s in the bottle that matters, so make sure to read the ingredients. When looking for winter moisturizers, look for key ingredients like AHAs (lactic acid), glycerin, and hyluronic acid. These powerful components work together to lock in moisture. For the best result, use immediately after showering.
4. DON’T Use Gel Cleansers
Gel cleansers are great for summer-heat induced oily skin, but during the winter they are too harsh. Most gel cleansers contain alcohol which steal moisture from your skin and leaves it dryer than before.
5. DO Keep Using SPF
Although you don’t see the sun as often in the winter, you should still apply SPF daily. It gives added moisture and blocks your skin from harmful rays.
6. DON’T Wash Your Hair Daily
Washing your hair takes the excess oils and dirt out of your hair. But, washing it too much during the winter leaves your scalp unhappy and leaves you with dull, static, and frizzy hair. Instead use dry shampoo or baby powder on your roots to keep them looking fresh.
7. DO Use a Humidifier
Cold weather is dry weather and the first to feel its affect is our skin. Replenish it by using a humidifier, you’ll immediately notice a difference.
8. DON’T Over Exfoliate
Exfoliating sloughs off extra skin. Sounds great, right? Not always; too much exfoliating can lead to even dry, fragile, even irritated skin. In the winter it’s best to keep the exfoliating to a minimum and focus on keeping your skin hydrated.
9. DO Protect Your Lips With Chapstick
While our skin has glands that produce oils and moisture, our lips do not. In fact, the only source of moisture our lips receive is saliva from our mouth. So get in the habit of bringing along your favorite chaptick and make sure it has SPF in it to protect your sensitive lip-skin. Here are more winter lip tips.
