Let’s be real; Summer is a real jerk sometimes. I can’t even walk down to get the mail without a tsunami of back sweat cascading down my buttcrack. Gross? Yes. The Truth? Absolutely. As much fun as family vacations, lemonade, and fireworks are- you’d better expect equal amounts of burning your hands on your steering wheel, swamp ass, and melty makeup. Most of the time, I opt for a bare face because it’s not even worth trying to concoct a hot girl disguise only for it to peace the F out the second the door closes behind you. Alas, sometimes you can’t just go bare faced- so for those times I give you this: Makeup that will last through sweat, hot yoga, and the apocalypse.
You will need:
A dope face primer. I like Nyx Angel Veil or Too Faced Hangover Rx.
Concealer. Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer or Maybelline Fit Me are great!
A long wear foundation like Estee Lauder Double Wear or Revlon Color Stay.
A waterproofing agent like Makeup For Ever Aqua Seal.
A makeup setting spray like Ben Nye Final Seal or Urban Decay All Nighter.
Translucent powder. Elf makes a decent one but I really like Makeup For Ever Microfinish Powder
Clear brow gel. I like the one from Anastasia Beverly Hills.
A mascara top coat like Nyx Proof it!
Base Makeup
First things first, we’re basically shellacking makeup to our faces so make sure yours is clean. Not only does it make for better makeup application, but starting out with a clean base will increase wear time. We’re going to triple proof our face makeup today. This is not a game.
Start by priming your face. This is standard makeup procedure.
If you’re comfortable skipping a full blown face, opt for just concealer. If you don’t feel comfortable without full foundation, I have an answer for that too. You want to mix a few drops of Makeup For Ever Aqua Seal in with both of your base products. Double Wear and Color Stay are both pretty long wearing on their own- but Aqua Seal will make your makeup (sweat)bullet proof!
Then you can proceed to do your makeup as you usually would. I also suggest applying some translucent powder like the ones mentioned above to set your makeup in place. Use patting motions to avoid moving around the makeup you’ve already put on your skin.
Eyes and Brows
I would recommend keeping your under eyes bare or applied in such a way that if the makeup started to smear a little it would look flattering and smoky vs. looking like you just watched adorable cat videos while on your period and couldn’t stop crying. If you want to wear eyeliner- aqua seal can also be mixed in with that to keep it from migrating down your face. I love Nyx Proof it! to keep your mascara from smearing or flaking off as well.
Lucky for us, most brow products are waterproof anyways. Anastasia Dip Brow and Benefit Gimme Brow are both among my favorite products, but if you really want your brows to last through a nuclear blast Anastasia Beverly Hills Clear Brow Gel is where it’s at. Just make sure your brow is looking good before you apply it.
Lips
The Summer months are awesome for wearing bold lips, just be sure you will be able to reapply and clean up edges quickly and easily. Otherwise you could end up looking like this:
I prefer nude lipsticks that wear off evenly and can be reapplied easily. I like the Milani Amore Liquid Lipsticks and Maybelline Nude Lipsticks.
Lock it in
I used to watch my mom painstakingly apply her makeup and then mist her face with a giant aerosol can of hairspray. She said it was to keep her makeup on, but the only thing I could see was that it made her eyelashes stick to her browbone. Ouch. Now we have makeup setting sprays that achieve the same effect albeit a little less sticky and better for skin. I really like Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray, or Ben Nye Final Seal. Either of those will lock your makeup on until you decide you want it off- which is how I like it.
That’s it! Oh! Don’t forget:
