While it may seem a little nauseating to have a snail slithering up your chin while six or seven others are stuck to your cheeks and nose, Thai beauticians swear by the secreting snail slime and encouraging their patients to literally face their phobias.
From smoothing out wrinkles to hydrating skin, the latest beauty craze has gone au naturale. Snail facials originated in Thailand, and women everywhere are discovering the benefits of the sticky snail mucus and are regularly asking for more.
“Women who have tried snail facials regularly return for repeat treatments.”
The nutrients and antioxidants offered by snails are said to contribute to smoother skin and a stunning glow.
Mixtures of snail mucus date back all the way to ancient Greece. In fact, the great physician Hippocrates was said to have crushed snails into sour milk to cure skin inflammations. More recently, French beauticians have started putting the essence of snails in their lotions and face creams.
When it comes to a snail facials at the spa, the process is fairly simple and lasts about 45 minutes. The beautician places anywhere from 10-12 snails on your face and you’ll quickly feel a balmy coolness as they slide up, down, and over your cheeks, forehead, chin and nose. While the sensation is similar to lotion dripping on your face, some people have said the snails tickle as they slither over the lips.
Keeping your eyes closed during the procedure is a must, even for the adventurous type. It’s not just for the squeamish — snails will actually be slithering all over your face, and typically eye coverings or goggles are not given out because the snails help reduce wrinkles and puffiness around the eyes.
“Smoother skin and a stunning glow!”
The procedure definitely comes at a price – a fairly steep one. Getting the snail treatment can set you back anywhere from $250 to $500 for one visit. The goosebumps are free!
As with any procedure the results vary, but the protein-packed mucus is rich with hyaluronic acid and antioxidants which can rejuvenate even the dullest skin. After the procedure, dermatologists recommend plenty of moisturizer and of course, sunscreen to help keep your skin looking its best.
