Fourth of July is that time of year when we all brave heat, mosquitos, and crowds in the name of a great patriotic party. It’s an opportunity to have a little (or a lot!) of fun with your look, so step out of your comfort zone when you head to that July 4th parade, party, or fireworks show!
The more fun you have with your style, the better you’ll look.
But first, let’s break it down a little bit. There are ways to be wacky and there are ways to be tacky when you celebrate with red, white and blue. For example, it’s probably best to skip wearing an actual flag draped around you. It’s not the best way to treat something so symbolic, especially if you end up sitting on it or stepping on it.
You may also want to skip these cheesy shirts in favor of something with a more subtle message, and we promise you’ll regret wearing platform American flag shoes if you’ll be walking pretty much anywhere.
Here are some ways to have fun with your Independence Day look without causing faux-pas fireworks.

1. Want to wear a flag print? Pair it with something neutral.
Urban Outfitters
Wearing a full on flag-themed outfit is a little much, but if you want to go all out, go crazy girl!
For a more stylish flag-themed outfit, throw on a flag tank, flag crop top, or flag bikini top with some cut-off denim shorts. What’s more Americana than some good old fashioned light wash denim? If you want to really get into it, rock some cowboy boots and get that country girl vibe going.
If you go for some funky flag shorts, try a white tank and keep your all-American girl vibe going.
2. Throw some color in your hair

This is a great chance to do something different with your hair. I’ve been loving the colored-hair trend, especially Julianna Hough a lá Coachella. Unfortunately, I haven’t had the guts to try it out — yet.
Fourth of July’s a great time to find some red or blue washable hair dye or chalk. I love the look of putting color subtly around your ends for an ombre effect!
If this isn’t your thing, try something simple like a cute flag bow or headband. I also love the idea of tying a red, white, or blue bandana in your hair, as seen here.
You could also wear a cute, themed trucker hat to protect yourself from the heat, and add to your look. I still love ‘em, even though they’re an older trend.
3. Dress up old school
ModCloth
You fancy-pants, you. If you’re headed to a nicer event, but can still get away with something on theme, rock an all-American pin up girl style. Put your hair in an updo, and use it as an excuse to wear an awesome retro dress like this sassy number from ModCloth.

4. Style your shades
Nordstroms
Sunglass styles are so much fun these days, and 4th of July is the best time to take advantage of them with some flag-themed shades. Before the fireworks start, this is a great way to add a little touch of Americana to your look.
There an absolute ton of ways to style your July Fourth look. You can paint little flags on your nails, rock striped t-shirts, or simply wear something red, something white, and something blue. This is one holiday where I always dress up. You’ll see me rocking my Free People flag scarf, some aviators, and some denim shorts… and I can’t wait to see what you guys wear!
Just try not to wear a full on American flag bustier with matching shorts a la Katy Perry… unless you’re a rock star, or really, really, really into Fourth of July.
